The Wanganui region has a new rescue helicopter.
Prime Minister John Key on Friday officially launched the Palmerston North rescue helicopter service's new machine - a purpose-built, twin engine BK117 helicopter to replace the single-engine AS350FX2 that has served the region for 24 years.
The machine was blessed by Rangitaane
kaumatua Wiremu Te Awe Awe, and Mr Key spoke of the "courage and bravery" of rescue pilots and crew.
Philips Search and Rescue Trust chairman, Errol Millar said rescue helicopters were a partnership between the Government and community with around 50 per cent of funding coming from individuals, groups and sponsorship.
The new BK117 helicopter has been operational for six weeks, and has carried out 35 potentially life-saving missions.
