There are jars filled with glitter and baubles, birds, Barbie dolls and bottles tops.
Then there are those filled with useful objects like coins, screws and nails until the viewer is caught unawares by jars clad in balaclavas.
It is all part of the fun and fantasy of the Jar Room conceived by artist Lauren Lysaght and brought to fruition with support from Sarjeant Gallery assistant curator Jessica Kidd.
"I was inspired by the jar bar at Sustainable Whanganui's recycling centre," says Ms Lysaght.
Ms Kidd was convinced to go for it after she applied a quote from Albert Einstein to the project.
"If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it."
During the past few weeks, the two have visited pre-schools and rest homes with boxes of donated jars and objects to fill them with.
With contributions from community groups and individuals, the jars were added to a collection of more than 500 glass vessels filled and decorated with an astounding array of materials.
The Jar Room is open for viewing from Saturday at the Sarjeant's object-based gallery at the i-Site, 31 Taupo Quay in Whanganui.
