Investigation into ex-director's forestry accident

The investigation into the accident which hospitalised the director of a company convicted of forestry safety breaches is ongoing.

Murray Clunie was working for Waiariki Institute of Technology tutoring a forestry course in Marlborough last month when he was seriously injured.

He was the director of Great Lakes Harvesting when it was convicted of safety breaches causing the death of novice Wanganui forestry worker Reece Reid.

Less than a year after the conviction, Mr Clunie was employed as a tutor by Waiariki Institute.

Waiariki said this week the investigation was being continued by Worksafe and it did not know when it would be completed.

The institute confirmed it employed Mr Clunie last month, nine months after Great Lakes Harvesting was sentenced.

"This incident was discussed at length during his interview and Waiariki were satisfied with the outcome of that interview," a Waiariki spokesperson said.

Waiariki said any action taken against Mr Clunie would be decided at the conclusion of the investigation.
