It's a top-of-the-table clash on offer at Wembley Park today with the Devon Homes Wanganui Athletic team hosting Cole Murray Group Havelock North in the Lotto Federation League Cup.

Elsewhere, Wanganui City make the short trip to Palmerston North with the aim to show their nearest rivals, the Hokowhitu Rangers, why they hold first position in the Western Premiership.

Athletic will be riding high after last week's decisive 6-1 win over their bogey team, Palmerston North Boys High, and will be looking to repeat the performance against group leaders Havelock North today at 2.30pm on Wembley No1.

Poor weather over the week would surely have hampered decent preparations, lending itself more toward water polo, but Josh Smith and the rest of the Athletic coaching staff would have made the best of the situation and will be more than ready to take three points.

Havelock have proven to be a tough opposition for Athletic, with a 2-all draw and 1-0 win for the Reds meaning today's match should be a tight battle, mainly fought through the middle of the park.

Athletic suffered through throwing away a 2-0 lead in their first outing, and at the time were suffering wobbles in front of goal.

But strikers Anthony Bell and Smith whose accuracy I can personally attest to after he beat me in goal on a couple of occasions at indoor on Monday night look to have found their stride and are starting to find the back of the net with ease.

This will be a close match. Athletic midfielder James Oxtoby will need to be on his best form if they want to control the pace of the match, and because Havelock North have scored 10 unanswered goals in two matches, keeper Nick Hayward will surely be kept on his toes for 90 minutes.

My pick? A 1-0 victory to Athletic, with the goal coming in the dying minutes.

Wanganui City have become a juggernaut in Western Premiership, and look to be showing no sign of slowing down.

A slow start may have given them a bit of a fright last weekend, after not being able to assert their usual dominance, but they found their form to finish 6-0 winners.

Today, they travel to the horrid grounds of Skoglund Park to take on the second placed Hokowhitu Rangers, a test which has proven to be a tough one for City in their last two meetings.

Both fixtures ended up with a 1-0 scoreline in favour of City, with the matches being bitterly fought from whistle to whistle.

However, City coach Kelvin Francis will certainly be carrying the belief his squad is the better of the two and plays the better form of football.

Being able to put reliance on players such as Chris Annabell to marshal the game from the middle, having attacking options as Jamie and Luke Lambe, and a solid anchoring in the backline from Adrian Ngaau and Dylan Howells, it's tough to see how Hokowhitu will have found the answer to break down City since their last meeting.

I'm picking City to have grown the most out of the two teams, and they will be hungrier to get a better start than last week.

My prediction is a 4-1 win to City.

Yesterday's wet weather has seen local senior football postponed at Wembley due to the Wanganui District Council closing some of the fields.
