MetService have given Santa the perfect Christmas present - fine, sunny and settled weather on Christmas Eve when he's making those very important house calls.

And for the rest of us the good news is the sunny, warm weather will continue through Christmas Day and beyond.

Daytime temperatures on Saturday, Sunday and Boxing Day Monday will hover in the low to mid-20sC. Further inland there might be the odd shower in the afternoon.

Bob McDavitt, MetService weather ambassador, said the atmosphere's Christmas present to the country was an anticyclone.

"For about a week from December 20, the weather is expected to be settled in most places," Mr McDavitt said.

He said this looked like a decent spell for outdoor activities and for travelling around the country.

But he warned the anticyclone may not be 100 per cent dry because there was the likelihood of some afternoon showers .
