Wellington's Drax Project will play at Frank on February 14.

Wellington's Drax Project will play at Frank on February 14.

One of New Zealand’s biggest bands, supported by two Kiwi music legends, will perform in Whanganui for the first time at a Valentine’s Day show.

Drax Project, the jazzy, pop R&B band from Wellington, will perform at Frank Bar and Eatery on February 14.

The band of four will be joined by hip-hop artists Che Fu and King Kapisi’s collaborative project Hedlok, with Auckland alt-rock duo Made You Look to open.

Drax Project drummer and vocalist Matt Beachen said the band were “fizzing” to perform in Whanganui for the first time.

“We just love playing in new places and it feels like a good opportunity to see what Whanganui has got going on.

“Getting to do it with King Kapisi and Che Fu, and also the boys from Made You Look, it’s going to be a good night.

“I’ve got a good feeling about it because I feel the three artists in a row is kind of perfect, musically, for a good night – there’s a couple of legends on there.”

The band will be coming off the back of five shows, including one with UB40 Featuring Ali Campbell in Perth on January 18.

After the Whanganui show, they will head to Christchurch for the star-studded Electric Avenue festival in late February.

Despite Whanganui being sandwiched between the two, Beachen said the band saw the Valentine’s Day gig as just as big.

“We are going to be pretty revved up and warmed up ... I think it’s three big ones in a row.

“We play the same high-energy set everywhere. There’s something that we love about a smaller show that you can’t get from a bigger festival.”

Beachen said the band might have to “pull something special out” in honour of Valentine’s Day and the possibility of love in the air.

It will also give Whanganui the chance to hear their new song Summer Rain, which the band have played just a handful of times.

Beachen said it was important for Drax Project to perform in Whanganui because it often missed out on artists touring the country.

The band would be keen to organise regular, possibly annual, shows in the city.

“We’re looking forward to seeing how Whangas can react and get amongst it with us,” he said.

G Star Entertainment, an events company led by co-owners Annie Goodchap and Andy Newman, is organising the show.

The pair say they are excited to bring one of New Zealand’s biggest bands to Whanganui.

“It’s Valentine’s Day, what a perfect day to bring a league of legends to Whanganui; let’s be honest, there is something for everyone,” Chapman said.

“Whanganui is a place that we really want to jump into. Andy’s a local boy, I’m from Ohakune, and we see that Whanganui gets missed off the list with a lot of artists that are travelling around the country.”

The company, which has been operating for just over a year, has facilitated events at lesser-visited locations across the North Island.

It has organised events for Drax Project twice in the past, including one in Ohakune last August.

Newman said boutique events provided an opportunity to collaborate with local businesses and create opportunities.
