The sun shone and the crowds flocked to the first Rivercity Christmas Market yesterday.
Co-organiser Darryl Mallett, from Classic Hits, was all smiles as several thousand people enjoyed the market, held under the flowering pohutukawa trees on the banks of the Whanganui River.
There were about 70 stalls selling everythingfrom food to art to furniture to jewellery to crafts to Christmas decorations. There was also music and other entertainment.
Many of the stalls were decked out in Christmas decorations.
"We're really thrilled by the number of people here. We did advertise out of town, so we were hoping to get a good crowd," Mr Mallett said.
The day started off cloudy, but the sun came out well before the market started at 2pm. It went until 6pm.
Rachel Brandon from Blank Kanvas Concepts was delighted by the number of people visiting her stall. "It's been going for about half an hour and I've already sold quite a lot," she said.
Mr Mallett said the idea was to hold a "fun, community event" for Christmas.
