A man has been given community work for hitting a woman with a "four out of ten" punch.

Mitchell Van Der Lubbe pleaded guilty to common assault when he appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Butler said on August 6 Van Der Lubbe became agitated when the victim mentioned another male's name.

The pair left a property they were at and the victim "ran down the Whanganui River bank to get away from him".

Van Der Lubbe punched the victim, whom he'd been in an on and off relationship with, in the left hand side of the face.

The victim described the punch as a "four out of ten".

Judge Philip Crayton sentenced Van Der Lubbe to 100 hours community work.

"You have to understand that violence against any woman is unacceptable."
