Wanganui Collegiate School student Jonathan Brumley will this year celebrate Anzac Day in a special way - at Gallipoli.

The Year 12 student won the national final of the National Bank RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition and is travelling with the New Zealand Defence contingent for Anzac Day.

Jonathan's winning speech, "The Grave Injustice of Haane Manahi", paid tribute to Sergeant Haane Te Rauawa Manahi, of Ohinemutu at Rotorua, of the 28th Maori Battalion, who was recommended by four generals to receive the highest military honour, the Victoria Cross, but was instead given the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

Sergeant Manahi fought at the Battle of Takrouna where he led his men up a lime escarpment to take the pinnacle from the enemy. Jonathan said his mother bought Dr Paul Moon's book about Sergeant Manahi.

"It was such an interesting topic, and because of the controversy around not being given the VC. I really hope he is given the VC posthumously," Jonathan said.

The Queen gave the family of the late Sergeant Manahi, who was killed in a car crash in 1986, a sword, an altar cloth bearing her insignia and a photograph of herself and a letter to the people of Te Arawa. The family say that for them, it is the end of the matter. Jonathan was one of eight regional finalists who delivered their speeches at the National War Memorial in Wellington. He said he was "dumbfounded and very humbled" to learn of his win, and acknowledged the high calibre of speeches from the other contestants. RSA national president Don McIver praised the talent and passion of the young finalists and said Jonathan's speech was magnificent and brought home how connected young people were to our Anzac heritage. Jonathan won the trip, cash for his school and a laptop and digital camera to record his experiences at Gallipoli.

Did you know?

Te Arawa were presented with the Te Arawa Sword of Gallantry by Prince Andrew in 2007 from the Queen for the gallantry of Lance Sergeant Haane Manahi. The sword is a replica of the sword carried by Scottish officers in 1854.

The National Bank RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition is a partnership between the RSA and the National Bank, aimed at promoting among young people a deeper understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by those who have served New Zealand in wars and armed conflicts overseas.
