The clean-out of the Wanganui wastewater treatment plant's main pond is nearly finished.
Wanganui District Council's infrastructure manager Mark Hughes said loaders were currently on site helping to remove the last of the sludge from the bottom of the pond.
"We expect this work will be completed by the end
of the month," Mr Hughes said.
"The plant will then be ready for Hawkins Infrastructure to establish on site in early October to begin construction of the new wastewater treatment plant."
The new plant will incorporate part of the main pond from the current plant in the new configuration. The pond and tanks will be covered and the sludge regularly removed so there will not be ongoing odour problems, Mr Hughes said.
