The driver pulled over to help the other officer restrain Ede.
The incident happened after Ede was arrested for refusing to obey a police safety order.
Officers were called to a Wanganui address on January 22 for a "family violence incident" and asked him to leave.
Ede left, but returned a short time later and was told to leave again. When he refused police arrested him.
He became "angry" and "aggressive". He continued to be so throughout the ride to the station, and while at the station.
The 45-year-old has an "extensive" criminal history, ranging from 1987 to 2014 with a number of prison sentences for violence-related convictions.
"His history points to the fact that he can be a violent man.
"I recall in his defended hearing he was quite open about his dislike of police."
Judge Cameron said it was a "very foolish attitude to have".
"He shows no remorse because, of course, he has denied the incident and was convicted following a defending hearing."
Ede, who is employed full time by a local building firm, suffered a serious head injury in a vehicle accident several years ago.
A pre-sentence report said the injury caused Ede to "feel frustrated" and "causes him difficulty in communicating, especially when he is under stress".
Ede was sentenced to two months of community detention on charges of assaulting police and obstruction, with a curfew of 8pm-6am daily.
He was also sentenced to 120 hours of community work.
