A "pocket rocket" of a design has won Whanganui's Black Pine Architects a major regional award.

A small brick and glass addition to an existing Victorian villa in Great North Rd, Whanganui, has won Black Pine Architects a citation in the annual architecture awards run by the Western Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

Villa Cuba achieved the required house renovation with "modesty and simplicity" said awards jury chair, Palmerston North architect Agneesh Brahmbhattone.

Some materials found on site were repurposed for the extension, and this allowed the narrative of the older house to continue into the new, Mr Brahmbhattone said.
