Lorraine Dixon said recently she took her grandchildren to Castlecliff beach to pick up rubbish as part of Keep NZ Beautiful Clean-Up week.
Taking place in September each year, it's the biggest national clean up initiative to take place in New Zealand.
Last year more than 43,000 volunteers from more than 100 different areas across the country did their bit to keep their local community beautiful.
Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean-Up Week's central aim is to increase community participation of all kinds, but also addresses issues of sustainability, environment, health, crime and social inclusion.
