Whanganui East residents lost power for about an hour on this morning before planned maintenance on the electricity network was postponed.

Powerco network operations manager Phil Marsh said a power cut was necessary to ensure the safety of field crews while the work is carried out in the suburb.

But a Whanganui East resident said they had had no notification power would be cut.

"It's just inconvenient because people are stuck in a cold house. I had no idea I was going to be stuck all day with no power and no heating."

The work ended up being postponed and Powerco said electricity was restored to 347 households after an hour.

Powerco will provide electricity retailers with details of another date for the scheduled power cut.

"The retailers will pass this information on to their customers. Powerco apologises for the inconvenience this may have caused," a statement said.
