The annual fundraising walk to raise money for MND New Zealand will be held in Whanganui on November 12.
Motor neurone disease (MND) causes the muscles that enable us to move, speak, swallow and breathe to gradually stop working. MND can affect anyone and in New Zealand two people a week are diagnosed with the disease. In 2011, one in every 200 deaths in New Zealand was due to MND.
Registrations and fundraising are now open for the 5km "Around the Bridges Walk 2 D'Feet MND" in Whanganui.
Half of the funds raised will go toward supporting MND research in New Zealand and the other half will go to MND New Zealand for its work providing support for people with MND and their carers.
With walks being held all over New Zealand on November 12, there is a prize for the top fundraiser in each location and a prize for the top fundraiser overall. Last year Whanganui participants raised more than $3000 for MND.
