Victim needs rehab

A man involved in a car crash near Taihape last week will need to go into a brain injury rehab unit.

The man, in his early 20s, may have been thrown from a car that rolled off State Highway 1 into a paddock.

He was found about 25m from the vehicle, while another occupant, a woman, had to be cut from the car.

The man's mother said that he had been transferred from Whanganui Hospital to Wellington.

She said the doctors were "trying to transfer him to another hospital that has a brain rehab [unit]".

The Paraparaumu man suffered broken bones and a head injury on Monday last week when the car crashed.

His mother has been able to speak to him but said "he doesn't say much".

She said he did not know where he was, and it was "a bit like he's on a different planet".

The woman wanted to thank two Wanganui Chronicle readers who gave her money and car parts after she said in a previous interview in the newspaper that she could not afford to visit her son in hospital, and that her car was unwarranted and unregistered.

She said the donors were "beautiful".
