Young cooks from Wanganui Girls College set forth at the crack of dawn last Monday to compete in the Taranaki/Wanganui Hospitality Competitions at Western Institute of Technology in New Plymouth.
Sarah MacNabb and Katie Pull had earned first and second places in a recent challenge at UCOL Whanganui, and they
repeated their culinary success on Monday - Sarah collected the $100 first prize package and Katie brought home the silver medal.
Charee Redington gained a merit award in the Fonterra Savoury Cheese Muffins contest with her feta and spinach muffins and Hannah Reynolds, who was also a member of the winning omelette team at UCOL, gained a bronze medal for her creative cupcakes.
College cooking teacher Nina Barbezat said she was very proud of the students because they were competing against adult students from UCOL as well as others from high schools.
"They were very tired at the end of the day because we had such an early start - it was a 12-hour day with travelling time."
