The new Minister of Health says the Government hopes to expose students and young doctors to the benefits of practising in rural environments.
Dr Jonathan Coleman said it was a challenge to get doctors into "more remote areas" when asked about the difficulties of attracting specialist health professionals to Wanganui and surrounding towns.
In Ohakune, a GP is only available two days a week and the Te Waipuna Medical Centre only runs four days a week.
Dr Coleman said he was not aware of the limited healthcare situation in Ohakune, but the voluntary bonding scheme would encourage healthcare workers into similar areas.
Under the scheme, workers head to communities and work in specialties where they are most needed in return for an annual payment of up to $10,000.
