Traffic has been clocked at speeds of more than 110km/h in a Wanganui suburban street each day and almost a fifth of other motorists along the same stretch of road are regularly exceeding the 50km/h urban limit.
The law-breaking has been shown up by traffic counters put in place across the top end of Wakefield St in Wanganui East.
The counters were installed by the Wanganui District Council to collect data on traffic movements along the street and especially across the old wooden overbridge across the Wanganui-Marton rail line.
The bridge needs to be replaced. However, the council has suggested closing it to all but pedestrians and cyclists rather than spend $1.8million on replacement.
Rui Leitao, the council's senior roading engineer, said the traffic-counter data had uncovered some persistent law-breaking by some drivers.
