Afternoon Headlines | Firefighters urge extra fire caution and investigation under way after Bay of Plenty death | Friday, January 2, 2025

Four people will appear in the Hamilton Youth Court after a 100km pursuit across Waikato.

Police were alerted to a report of an aggravated robbery at about 8am this morning at a business on Pollen St in Thames.

Before police arrived at the scene, the alleged offenders had fled in a vehicle before abandoning it on a nearby street and taking off in a separate vehicle.

Police identified the second vehicle through inquiries and soon received reports of one matching the description driving dangerously.

“About 10.10am, the vehicle was spotted in Nawton, Hamilton,” Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Neilson said.

“The Police Eagle helicopter was tasked from Auckland and assisted in locating and tracking the vehicle of interest.”

Two of the alleged offenders were spotted being dropped off at a residence near Waikato Hospital and arrested shortly after, while the vehicle continued on.

However, the car was successfully spiked at about 11.30am on Bartholomew Drive before stopping on Sunnyside Rd.

“The alleged offenders attempted to flee in a third vehicle but were intercepted by the police and taken into custody.”

Two men, aged 20 and 18, along with two 14-year-old boys, have been charged with aggravated robbery, unlawfully using a vehicle and failing to stop for Police.

Neilson said an investigation into the incident will continue, with more charges likely to come.

“The victim of the robbery was understandably shaken by the incident and Police would like to thank members of the public who assisted the victim.”
