Hamilton's Dave Snell features in a new series about bogan culture.

Hamilton's Dave Snell features in a new series about bogan culture.

A TV show celebrating bogans and featuring Hamilton's own 'Dr Bogan' screens for the first time on TV2 tonight.

Last year bogan Dr Dave Snell, known as Dr Bogan having completed his PhD thesis on bogan culture, was approached by Workhouse Productions and asked to be part of a new show called, simply, Bogan.

Bogan is a 10-episode documentary series and Dave features heavily in the show with three other key bogans: Fro, Anton and Kate-Mate.

Dave describes Fro as his collaborator. They have a YouTube channel together, they're working on a movie, and they have a radio show.

Anton is the car guy. Dave said he's hard case, easy going, has a mullet, a beard and wears Metallica shirts.

Dave said Kate-Mate is the female voice of the show, and also describes her as hard case.

"We are very much insiders so it's more of a celebration than a point and laugh. I mean it is still funny, there are still some people doing some interesting stuff. But you're laughing with them rather than laughing at them," said Dave.

"The show centres around the four of us going to different events and I sort of provide some of the explanations and my take on things from that kind of bogan academic insider's perspective."

With other shows like Australia's Bogan Hunters having aired, Dave said Bogan is nothing like that.

"If it was going to be something like that show, I wasn't going to be part of it. This is more of a celebration of the culture. Whereas Bogan Hunters, no offence to the people that made it, it almost feels like exploiting and the people that host that show, they're actors. I mean the main woman on that show, if you see what she looks like in everyday life as compared to what she looks like on the show, it's two completely different things."

So what can we expect? According to Dave, there are plenty of interesting characters, car shows, West Fest footage, wrestling, some heavy rock and a lot of black.

"It's sharing a story of a bogan identity and by extension a New Zealand identity. It's kind of a mixture of looking at how stereotypes of bogans do fit, and also looking at when they don't fit, so there's that balance."

Dave wasn't able to give away to much about what will actually go on throughout the series but he did share a snippet.

"My favourite moment in the show was when we went to an IPW wrestling event up in Auckland. I got to have a couple of moves tried on me, which was hilarious."

"You don't necessarily have to be a bogan to listen to Judas Priest, people are into cars who aren't necessarily bogan. I think it will appeal to a wide range of people, it's not just aimed at bogans."

Bogans airs on TV2 on Thursdays at 9.30pm.
