Waikato secondary students starting tertiary education next year can apply for one of 36 $5000 scholarships on offer.

The scholarships are funded by the David Johnstone Charitable Trust founded by education-minded Waikato farmer David Johnstone 17 years ago.

Last year, the trust awarded $180,000 in scholarships to new students at Waikato tertiary institutions, and a similar amount will be awarded this year to students beginning study in science-related studies, or teaching at Waikato University, or any field of study at the Waikato Institute of Technology.

The funds are administered by Guardian Trust. Almost $1 million has been distributed from the trust during the past five years.

Nominations for the scholarships close on Tuesday, September 25. Successful recipients will be presented with their scholarships on November 7.
