Te Awamutu Police manned a temporary roadblock on Alexandra St this morning - asking motorists for their reasons to be travelling.

The measure was part of Covid-19 awareness and education for which police play a key role.

Officers have also been visible at supermarkets and other essential businesses making sure people are following the level 4 rules.

Sergeant Rob Pierce of Te Awamutu Police says there has been a high level of compliance around the Waipā region.

He says where there have been breaches it was generally because of lack of knowledge.

Rob says people seem to have a better understanding of what is expected this year, although some warnings have been issued and breach notices for any repeat offenders.

An upside of level 4 is a sharp decrease in property offending, such as burglaries, and with fewer motorists on the road, no serious injury or fatal crashes.

Rob says the incidence of reported family harm has also stayed stable since prior to level 4.
