State Highway 1 is closed following a serious crash near Tīrau.

Police were called to the two-vehicle crash between SH5 and Webster Rd about 7.50am.

“Initial indicators are that there are serious injuries,” police said.

“The road is expected to be closed for some time.”

NZ Transport Agency said SH1 was closed south of Tīrau with closure points at the SH1/SH5 roundabout and SH1/SH28 intersection.

“Follow directions given by emergency services on-site, and allow additional time for travel between Tīrau and Putāruru.”

Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to expect delays.

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said one person has been flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition and another by ambulance in a moderate condition.
