A petrol tanker has crashed into a ditch on State Highway 39 near Hamilton, blocking one lane, police say.

Police said motorists can expect delays until the scene, near the suburb of Temple View, is cleared and urge people to travel a different way.

The crash occurred about 6.30am.

"For all you early risers out there a truck has gone off the road and into a ditch on State Highway 39 near Tuhikaramea Road," Waikato police posted on its Facebook page.

"If you are planning on travelling along this stretch of road it is recommended that you take an alternative route."
