Quirky craft at show

From quirky to traditional, a wide range of New Zealand-made crafts will be on display at the Dunkleys Great New Zealand Craft Show at the Claudelands Events Centre.

"While we allow some imported craft supplies and kitsets, all the ready-made crafts must be New Zealand-made," says show director Fiona Dunkley.

"Our shows give craftspeople the opportunity to sell work direct, in a warm, well-lit and friendly shopping environment."

The shows also allows the chance to meet the makers.

"Many of our exhibitors live in the country and find our shows the best way to get their work in front of the public. They love meeting people and showing them what they do," she said.

After more than 30 years in the business, Dunkley says she has a good eye for design and quality. "The selection of the exhibitors is my responsibility. Whenever something new or unusual arrives in the post, or via email, I love showing it to the rest of the office staff."

Every craft imaginable will be at the show until Sunday - from Victorian-styled and decorated lampshades to exquisitely hand-made dolls and accessories. There's crafts for blokes, including bush craft supplies and venison salami.

Everything is for sale at prices much cheaper than retail outlets. "There's no middle man, so the makers are selling direct to the buyers," says co-director and brother, Kim Dunkley.

Hobby and craft supplies will also be for sale with the exhibitors demonstrating their products on their sites and at a series of daily workshops. The basic beading and fabric sculpture classes are guaranteed to be hot favourites."

Show patrons can learn from the experts at craft workshops and try delicious artisan food and drink, Friday to Sunday, 10-5pm. Eftpos for cash withdrawals and a free parcel-minding service are available at the information desk at the show entrance.
