The incident occurred around 8pm last night.

The incident occurred around 8pm last night.

A police officer has been injured after a vehicle was driven at a patrol car in Huntly last night, police say.

The officer was taken to Waikato Hospital and treated for a moderate injury before being discharged, a police spokesperson said.

“They are expected to make a full recovery and are being provided with support through the process.”

The incident comes a month after Nelson policewoman Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming, 62, was killed on foot patrol when she was struck by a car early on New Year’s Day in Buxton Square carpark. A man is facing several charges, including murder.

Four days later, four people - including two police officers - received minor to moderate injuries when a vehicle crashed into a stationary police car in Whangārei.

The driver may have fallen asleep, with alcohol thought to be involved, police said at the time.

Last night’s incident happened at 8pm as the police officer was making inquiries on an unrelated matter at a Huntly property, the police spokesperson said.

“The officer ... had stepped out of their patrol car when another vehicle drove toward them, colliding with the patrol vehicle and the officer.

“The offending driver fled but was located and arrested.”

A 47-year-old man was taken into police custody and was due to appear in Hamilton District Court today facing charges, the spokesperson said.

A Hato Hone St John Ambulance spokesperson said they were called at 8.02pm and sent an ambulance and an operations manager.

“We transported one person to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.”
