Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on State Highway 1 at Meremere.

One person has been taken to Middlemore Hospital after a “serious” crash on State Highway 1, Waikato.

Police were called to a crash between a car and a motorbike in Meremere at 1.45pm.

Initial reports indicated “serious injuries”.

Hato Hone St John responded with an ambulance, rapid response unit, and helicopter.

“One patient, in serious condition, has been transported by road to Middlemore Hospital,” a St John spokesperson said.

Police said the Serious Crash Unit had been advised.

Earlier, SH1 was closed northbound from Hampton Downs Rd, and motorists could re-enter the expressway at Springhill Rd.

Police said the northbound lanes have now reopened.

Police thanked motorists for their patience while the scene was cleared.
