GeoNet reported that quake hit 5km south of Te Aroha, at a depth of 7km, just after 5.30am.
Another shake was later reported at 11.21am that day, also located 5km south of Te Aroha.
More than 20,000 people have reported feeling shaking during the morning quake.
Newstalk ZB caller Robin felt the earthquake in Matamata, south of Te Aroha. “I was lying in bed and I just felt a shake.”
Another listener, Gayle, also felt it north of Te Aroha.
“It was a real sharp one here in Paeroa. I was asleep. I was like, oh deck, do I get under the door or what do I do?”
Caller Wendy felt it in Papakura. “I was just lying in bed listening to [Newstalk ZB] and then the house shook, and then the bed shook.”
