Petrolheads will take to the road again in November for the Kawhia Cruise, raising funds for multiple sclerosis.

Almost 50 cars packed with people took part in the cruise from Hamilton to Kawhia last year and raised almost $5500 for MS Waikato.

Diagnosed with MS early last year, Adam Muir decided it was no excuse to sit around, and came up with the idea of the Kawhia cruise after having to end his rally driving career because of the disease.

Having re-evaluated his lifestyle after also having battled cancer of his salivary gland, Adam has continued to be involved with cars and intends to drive until his condition prevents it. This year's ride will be in memory of his wife, Shelley, who died earlier this year after a brave battle with cancer.

"I came up with the idea when I was in hospital," said Adam. "I used to race cars and I raised money for myself for that. Now, I drive cars and I raise money for other people.

"It is about sharing your experience and helping people. I'm in a position now I can get on with life."

Adam explains having MS is like running a marathon everyday, with exhausted muscles by the end of it.

He said while he may eventually have to be in a wheelchair, he is on top of the disease for now and he is making the most of life.

The day will start with breakfast for the cruisers at the Classics Museum's Jukebox Diner in Frankton at 8.30am on November 2, followed by a cruise to Kawhia with a brunch stop on the way.

Adam aims to continue the event annually.

All car owners are invited to join a great day out on the West Coast with prizes donated by Auto Trail for the best-looking ride, the best bling, the best classic 'Pom or Jappa', the best original car, the most chrome and the oldest vehicle. A donation of $5 or more is asked for and all proceeds will go to MS Waikato.

For more information, search 'Kawhia Cruise' on Facebook.
