Hamilton McDonald's staff hid in a freezer as three men armed with crowbars smashed their way into the takeaway outlet.

A police spokesperson said the armed robbers were all wearing balaclavas when they stormed their way into the Greenwood St store about 3.20am today.

The scene was secured overnight before forensic police staff got to the scene this morning.

A dark coloured vehicle was used by the offenders and it's unclear what was taken.

Inquiries are ongoing.
