Three men wearing balaclavas and armed with metal bars made off with cash in a brazen robbery of a McDonald's drive-through restaurant.

Police said the aggravated robbery occurred just after 3am at the Huntly fast-food chain on Great South Rd.

A police spokeswoman said the trio smashed their way into the main entrance of the locked restaurant and demanded workers lie on the ground. No one was injured. The McDonald's was only open to drive-through customers at the time.

Police said the men made off on foot with the cash.
