Commuters in Hamilton are being encouraged to park in the Knox Street carpark as the Garden Place parking building returns to having a mainly shopper focus.
With the scheduled opening of the redeveloped CentrePlace shopping centre and adjacent cinema complex, demand for the Hamilton City Council-owned Garden Place carpark isexpected to soar.
While the first hour's parking is free (along with a second hour with CentrePlace store validation) the daily charge will rise from $6.50 to $8 on October 14 and commuters will get a better deal at Hamilton City Council-owned Knox Street carpark where the daily rate is moving from $6 to $5.
Transportation manager Phil Consedine says the CBD is undergoing a resurgence with more people using the city for shopping.
"We are raising the price of longer-duration parking to ensure there is more space in the Garden Place carpark for visitors coming to the central city.
"Council will lower the price of parking at the Knox Street carpark to provide a good alternative. Knox Street has the added advantage of the free city shuttle bus service to link with other parts of the city centre.
There are 458 parking spaces in the Garden Place carpark, including facilities for the disabled. Entry is off Anglesea St.
There are 450 spaces in Knox St and this facility has security cameras and staff on site all day.
