NZ Herald Afternoon Headlines | Sunday May 10, 2026 US and Iran peace talks are yet to make headway. The passengers on the hantavirus cruise ship are set to quarantine for weeks.

A young British man who died in a crash on State Highway 1 near Kinleith has been remembered as a “fun-loving, and passionate” cricket teammate.

James Daniel Spence, 28, from Hull, Yorkshire, and Raphael Jean-Gabriel Roellinger, 22, from France, died after the crash south of Tokoroa on April 29.

Spence’s United Kingdom cricket club, Hull Strikers, paid tribute to him with a heart-warming Facebook post last week, describing him as one of the most “vibrant characters both on and off the field”.

“His enthusiasm for the game and his presence within the club made a lasting impact on teammates and the wider Strikers community,” the post read.

“Jamie’s connection to Hull Strikers ran deep. Such was his pride and commitment to the club, he carried its identity with him permanently, symbolised by a tattoo on his arm – a reflection of the strength of his bond with the team."

His tattoo read: “Pride, passion, respect, be ruthless, Hull Strikers 25”.

The club expressed its devastation at the loss, describing a sense of shock and disbelief, particularly with the prospect of Spence returning to play alongside them.

The team returned to the pitch last week, where they dedicated their win to Spence.

“We took the field with heavy hearts, playing with 10 men after the heartbreaking loss of our teammate and brother Jaime, who was part of this very squad just days ago.

“Being taken from us so suddenly in a tragic accident has left a void that can never truly be filled.

“He wasn’t just a player – he was one of the biggest supporters of this club, always bringing energy, passion, and a smile that lifted everyone around him. That spirit was with us today in every run, every wicket, and every moment on the field.

“A special moment for us all was seeing his dad Jon come down to support the team today – a true reflection of the bond and family spirit this club stands for. It meant more than words can say.

“This victory is for you. There is no better tribute than giving everything out there, just like you always did.

“You’ll always be a part of this team. Forever a Striker.”

The crash is being investigated.

Police previously appealed for anyone with information to come forward, particularly anyone who may have dashcam footage from around the time of the crash.

Motorists on the Tar Hill highway between 8.30pm and 9.30pm were being urged to check their dashcam footage and contact police.

Police were also asking the drivers of two truck-and-trailer units, northbound in a passing lane at the time of the accident, to contact them.

Police believe one of the northbound trucks was nearly hit by a car involved in the collision, when it overtook a truck and returned to the southbound lane.

Members of the public can contact the police through 105, online or over the phone, and reference file number 260430/0478.
