It was finals night for the Montana Catering Monday night Secondary Schools competition on 12 June 2017.
The Premier A grade final this year again proved to be a nail biter with the huge spectator crowd on the edge of their seats. For the teams involved this was a highly competitive and strongly contested game. Both teams displayed a lot of pace, skill, ability and determination over the entire 60 minutes.
From the first to the final whistle the players gave it their all in what was a close but see-sawing match. At the end of the first quarter St Paul's Collegiate Open A had a narrow one goal lead only to see St Peter's Premier reverse the tables to lead by three goals at half time. The half time score was 20 goals to 17.
St Paul's won the third quarter to make the score drawn at 29 all. In the final quarter it was goal for goal and it was only in the final few minutes that St Peter's managed to get marginally ahead and to take the win at the final whistle. The final score was 38 goals to 36.
All players and their management can be proud as this was a truly fitting final. And their support cannot be understated - there was a large contingent of spectators that chanted, sang, shouted and entertained.
There was barely any standing room around the edge of the court, overall a great spectacle.
In the other finals for the Premier B grade Waikato Diocesan Development won by 10 goals against Hamilton Girls High School Prem Reserve with the final score being 57 goals to 47. In the Development grade Hamilton Girls High School Junior won by eight goals over Fairfield Open with the final score 47 goals to 39. And in the Y10 Grade Cambridge Junior Premier won by 15 goals over Waikato Diocesan 10A1 with the final score 52 goals to 37.
Prize giving was completed at the conclusion of the finals with all winning teams represented - prizes were awarded by Montana Catering.
It was congratulations to all teams involved and to the staff and volunteers at Hamilton City Netball Centre.
