A man has been found fighting for his life on a rural Waikato road this morning.

Police are trying to figure out how the man turned up injured on Hampton Downs Rd in Whangamarino.

The man was taken to Auckland City Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

A reporter at the scene said Hampton Downs Rd was closed from where it intersected with Landfill Access Rd.

There were two police vehicles parked on Hampton Downs Rd. Traffic control contractors were parked at the intersection marking the road closure.
