A woman was indecently assaulted by an intruder as she slept in her Hamilton home early this morning.

Police said the man - who had a particularly long, bushy and unkempt beard - entered the woman's home about 3.30am.

He indecently touched the sleeping woman, who awoke and raised the alarm. The man then fled on foot.

The man was described as a medium to solidly built Caucasian in his 30s, about 1.72m to 1.77m tall.

He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
