A body has been found after a house fire in Hamilton early this morning.

Police had earlier confirmed one person was unaccounted for after the fire in the Fox St home. Three other occupants escaped, while some neighbours had to be evacuated because of the danger.

“Police can now advise that one person has been located deceased following a house fire in Hamilton this morning”, a police spokeswoman said.

“A scene guard is in place and police will be working at the address today alongside Fenz [Fire and Emergency New Zealand] investigators.

The alarm was raised at 3.05am.

The house was “fully engulfed” by fire, she said.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said fighters from Hamilton, Chartwell and Te Rapa stations had put the fire out by 4.10am, but one crew remained on the scene dampening down hotspots.

The cause of the fire in the single-storey home was not yet known.
