A serious crash has closed the southbound lane on the Waikato Expressway, State Highway 1, between Huntly and Ohinewai.

All traffic is currently being diverted off the expressway via Great South Rd, through Huntly.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said motorists should expect delays.

Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash near Ralph Rd at 11.50am, police said.

“One person has received critical injuries.”

Hato Hone St John responded with one ambulance and a rapid response unit attended, a spokesperson said.

“One patient, in serious condition, is being transported to Waikato Hospital.”

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said some of its personnel attended the scene and assisted the police and St John.

There was nothing to suggest anyone needed to be extracted from the vehicle, they said.

Two crews from Huntly, along with an additional crew from Ngāruawāhia, were asked to attend.

“The Ngāruawāhia crew were asked to turn around due to not being required anymore.”
