A Fulton Hogan employee has died helping a stranded driver while working on a section of the Waikato Expressway.

Emergency services were called to the crash involving a car and pedestrian on SH1 Waikato Expressway near Te Kauwhata at 7am yesterday.

Police said the pedestrian died at the scene.

Fulton Hogan has confirmed to the Herald the person was an employee and was contracted to New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) at the time of the crash.

“Fulton Hogan has been made aware of a tragic incident that occurred on a Waikato worksite earlier this morning, where a Fulton Hogan employee was fatally injured when assisting a stranded vehicle.

“Fulton Hogan’s key focus at this time is to support those affected by this tragic event and provide full assistance to authorities.

“No further details are available at this time.”

An NZTA spokesperson told the Waikato Herald they were “deeply saddened and upset” by the tragedy that took the life of a staffer.

“Our thoughts are with the person’s family and friends at this time. Everyone deserves to be able to return home from work safely.”

The expressway was closed southbound from the Te Kauwhata and Rangiriri on ramps while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said it sent three crews, one from Te Kauwhata and two from Huntly.
