Scallop season open
The recreational scallop season in Northland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, is open. The legal bag limit for scallops is 20 per fisher per day. In addition, divers are entitled to an extra daily bag for each of up to two safety people on board a boat - provided they are acting as safety people for the divers. Minimum legal size of scallops in the area is 100 millimetres measured across the widest part of the shell. The scallop season closes on March 31.
Community meeting
The Glenview Community Centre annual meeting is on September 20 at 6.30pm. The centre is looking for vibrant, motivated board members to join the team. Film festival
Raglan's annual film festival started yesterday and runs until September 23. The line-up includes feature films, animated movies, and the Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards ceremony on Saturday, September 22, which will shine the spotlight on Raglan's own filmmakers and actors with a screening of the short films and highlights of the nominated features before the honours are awarded. Seabed mapping
NIWA's research vessel Tangaroa has sailed to map the seabed in the mid-to-outer Greater Hauraki Gulf, including the coast off Coromandel. The focus of the survey is to provide base bathymetric mapping of the area that will support the Auckland and Waikato Councils, Ministry for Primary Industries, Department of Conservation, Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), iwi, and commercial and recreational fishers, as well as providing key baseline knowledge on which to build well targeted future scientific research.
Age study grant
A two-year investigation into keeping older people independent and active has been granted $687,000 by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
Making Active Ageing a Reality project is being led by Professor Peggy Koopman-Boyden at the National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis at the University of Waikato and aims to encourage greater independence for older people living alone, increase their productivity, and keep them connected in an increasingly digital age.
