Hamilton authorities are on the hunt for an armed fugitive on the run with his toddler in tow.

Police are searching for Nykell Hegotule and have issued a warrant for his arrest for breaching release conditions.

The 28-year-old was last seen in Hamilton on Monday and he's believed to be armed and have his 3-year-old son with him.

Hegotule has links to Waikato, Northland and Auckland and police warn he should not be approached.

In 2010, Hegotule - then 22 - was wanted by Kaitaia Police on charges of aggravated robbery, theft, taking a motor vehicle and taking/obtaining/using a document for a pecuniary advantage.

He was described as having Black Power connections.

He has a two-centimetre scar in the middle of his forehead and several tattoos, including YOZA across his left knuckles, BP in bold lettering on his right forearm and TEESH in italics/old English on his left forearm.

A police spokeswoman said there were no custody issues in relation to Hegotule having the child and police had been in contact with the child's mother.
