All I needed was something to attach the back door to the trellis to stop it slamming shut in the nor'wester. The wind was doing my head in, the heat was doing my head in, the bang, bang, bang of the slamming door was doing my head in and if I didn't find something to sort it out there'd be chaos and carnage.

Now where did I put that old bungee cord? Picking my way past fishing rods, teetering towers of pot-plant holders, prehistoric sacks of walnuts and some old weights, I accidentally kicked my little toe on the corner of a box marked "kitchen stuff". When the pain fog waned and I ran out of expletives, I picked up the box hoping it might contain the bungee cord I'd been hunting for or my icecream maker, which had been missing since Y2K.

But instead it contained three bottles of wine. The first was the Church Road Reserve Syrah 2008, the second Craggy Range's Single Vineyard Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2008 and the third was Vidal Estate's Hawke's Bay Syrah 2008 - so there was nothing for it but to open them right then and there to see how they were tasting five years down the track.

The Vidal Estate HB Syrah 2008, $20 () is at its optimum drinking now I think. Classic peppercorn and prune aromatics overlap super-savoury, complex spicy tones, developed black fruit notes and mouth-puckering tannins. I thought it was a bargain when I bought it and I'm certain of that now. Great stuff. The Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2008, $32 ( 1/2) has the most delicious, silky texture and a raft of berryfruit and spice flavours. Glossy and gorgeous in the glass, with aromas of cracked pepper, cocoa and elevated, floral tones followed by a fresh, feisty finish, there's easily another few years left in this wine.

But of all three, the one I wanted a second glass of was the Church Road Reserve Syrah 2008, $38 (). Perfumed, savoury and peppery with leather, berryfruit and dark chocolate notes. The tannins were emery-fine and dusty after a few years but that just lifts the wine to another realm. A real classic, and if you have any of this in your collection then you are to be congratulated; well done, you.

No sleep till Blenheim

If you're planning to spend any time in a hotel on Blenheim's main strip over the next few weeks, then take it from me, you'll need to pack a set of industrial-strength earplugs and some sleeping pills.

Why? Because it's harvest time and every truck this side of the black stump is barrelling from one end of the region to the other, ferrying tonnes of grapes from the vineyards through the town and off to wineries and co-operative facilities to be processed.

This magnificent growing season has culminated in a grape-picking frenzy and it's 24-hour, non-stop noise. Exciting noise, but noise all the same.

But don't grizzle because you can't do anything about it. The wine industry keeps this region rolling so just make sure you come prepared. Stuff your ears, pop a pill and snuggle down. You'll thank me in the morning.

Wine searcher launches iPhone app

I'm a huge fan of www.wine-searcher.com, using it as on an almost daily basis, so I'm excited about their recent news. You'll now be able to access wine-searcher.com's enormous database from anywhere.

CEO Mark Brown said the app was "a logical step forward for wine-searcher in providing website users with quick and easy access to wine prices and stores".

The database is huge, listing 5.5 million wines with 40,000 stores across the world.

The app has pretty much everything the website does including a "where to buy" function which compares stores and prices for individual wines in specific areas and a "wine details" function, which includes critics' scores, awards and reviews. There is also an app-only "store finder" function. The app is available at Apple's App Store.

TOP SIPS

Mountford Estate Liaison Waipara Pinot Noir 2009 $50

Aromas of strawberry shortcake, raspberry and youthful juicy plum alongside deliciously subtle mace and nutmeg notes. It has that gorgeous combination of florals and fruit which makes Waipara pinot noir so inviting. Solid, exciting and still in its infancy - a pinot you can enjoy now or cellar for another few years. www.mountfordvineyard.co.nz

Weaver Estate Central Otago Pinot Gris 2011 $25

Very lean and showing great palate focus and delicious pear and quince notes on the nose and palate. It's dry, but there's an element of richness in the mouth and an enticingly long finish. A nicely crafted wine. www.weaverwines.co.nz
