Movie Review: Pitch Perfect (+trailer)

There's little doubt the hit TV series Glee played a good part in the creation of Pitch Perfect.

Instead of high school, we are in college. Instead of a glee club, we are in a capella group.

Despite the similarities, Pitch Perfect has done remarkably well in taking the Glee formula and improving on it. There's some great music throughout but the Glee sugar-sweet formula is set aside for something a little more realistic.

Beca (Anna Kendrick) is new to Barden University but is not exactly an enthusiastic student.

Forced by her father to get an education before pursuing her dream of being a music producer, Anna begrudgingly goes about uni life.

Encouraged to get involved in an extra-curricular activity, Anna is persuaded to take her singing from the shower to the stage.

The Barden Bellas are an all-girl a capella group who want to take their craft all the way to the national collegiate finals.

Led firmly by Aubrey (Anna Camp), the group is too regimented and lacks anything like enough flair to go very far.

Anna knows what is required to succeed and keeps pushing to be allowed to use her producing skills to bring something special out of the group.

Making their life more difficult is The Treblemakers, an all-boy group at their university who know how to achieve success.

Anna's struggle to fit in with uni life mirrors her struggle with the Bellas and she must find her own peace first.

The Bellas have an eclectic mix of students, but none funnier than Fat Amy (Aussie actress Rebel Wilson) who sees life through refreshingly honest eyes.

There is a lot to like about Pitch Perfect. There is an entertaining storyline, funny moments, interesting characters and lots of vibrant music.
