Forget the comic book hero: Superman has come of age in this action-packed contemporary adventure.

The Man of Steel (English actor Henry Cavill) is not all about leaping tall buildings in a single bound; he is a man on a strange planet wondering where he came from.

Born Kal-El on the planet Krypton, he is jettisoned in an escape capsule by his father Jor-El (Russell Crowe) as their world is about to end.

Jor-El believes Kal-El is the future of their people, but must escape to make that happen.

Jor-El is trying to protect Krypton from General Zod (Michael Shannon), the military chief.

Kal-El crashes to Earth and a simple Kansas family adopts him, teaching him the rights and wrongs of life while also being aware that he is someone special with extraordinary talents. Knowing the world wouldn't accept him as a friendly alien, Clark must blend in and keep his secret powers hidden.

As an adult and slowly feeling a true part of his community, Clark's world is thrown upside down by the arrival of an alien ship on Earth.

General Zod, who vowed to track down the missing child, has found him and demands Earth hands him over.

As you might imagine, this is the start of an almighty battle of will and strength.

Earth's humans have no power to subdue General Zod, so it is up to Clark to reveal himself as Superman and rid the planet of the unwelcome aliens.

With newspaper reporter and friend and sidekick Lois Lane (Amy Adams), Clark launches himself against General Zod.

The ghost of Jor-El helps Clark find a way to discover the Achilles heel of the aliens.

Strap yourselves in for out-of-this world special effects as the most almighty of battles begins and destroys everything in its path.

These special big-budget epics such as Man of Steel, Batman and The Avengers are a cut above their imitators and offer a spectacle that is staggering in its execution and extent.

Judging by the early worldwide box office returns and the ending here, I'm sure this is not the last we have seen of Superman. We look forward to his return.
