In last week's God of War review, I described the new Tomb Raider as a prequel, which isn't technically correct. This is actually a complete reboot of the legendary Tomb Raider series.
The fifth Tomb Raider game, developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix, re-establishes the origins
of Lara Croft and lays down the foundations for a new series.
The new Tomb Raider tends to focus more on survival than all-out exploration, although there are enough exploration elements to keep traditionalists happy.
The story is based on the island of Yamatai and sees Croft attempting to save her friends and escape a malevolent cult.
The single player campaign borders on survival gaming perfection. The island setting is atmospheric and the visuals proof this generation of consoles has graphically peaked in its twilight year. The action-filled storyline is gritty and thrilling, with a score that beautifully ebbs and flows to build excitement.
