In what is touted as a "groundbreaking entertainment experience", Defiance is a game/TV show crossover between Trion and the cable channel Syfy. What happens on screen in the TV show in each episode is meant to bleed into the online-only, massively multiplayer third-person shooter.
Groundbreaking? Most definitely - it's never
been attempted before and is an exciting concept if executed well. Is it executed well? No, not really.
Defiance as a TV show (which doesn't screen in New Zealand but can be viewed online), has good production values, a decent storyline and a solid cast of character actors. Defiance the game has reasonable gameplay mechanics, some epic battles and exciting dynamic events.
But so far - and by that I mean it's relatively early days for the series - the game/TV crossover has been minimal to say the least. It's a promised feature that hasn't been delivered yet and comes across as a gimmick designed purely to sell units.
That aside, Defiance as an MMO game is fun, but presents far too many disappointments to appease fussy MMO fans.
