Tauranga-based Labour MP Jan Tinetti has been given a new role within the party.

Tinetti will be the "buddy" Labour MP for the Coromandel electorate, for which National's Scott Simpson is the MP.

As part of her new duties, last week Tinetti visited Katikati schools and Katikati Kindergarten and the Katikati Maori Wardens to see the work they are doing in the area.

She then visited Paeroa Central School where she was welcomed with a powhiri.

Tinetti also went on to Thames where she met with the Thames Coromandel District Council and the local high school.

"I'm excited to be the Labour buddy MP to the Coromandel electorate," Tinetti said.

"My first two days of visits gave me a brief taste of the vibrant and dynamic community. I am looking forward to visiting more groups within the electorate in the near future."
