School children received boots from last year's Bring Yer Boots from Sport HB's Sally McKenzie.

School children received boots from last year's Bring Yer Boots from Sport HB's Sally McKenzie.

Seeing the boots and gear roll in for Hawke's Bay Today's annual Bring Yer Boots campaign is a heartening sight.

It's based on getting rid of the sometimes expensive outlay for young people wanting to play sport.

So, come autumn, on the eve of the winter sport season, we partner with Sport Hawke's Bay to get young people on the paddocks, turfs and courts.

But this year, our fourth year behind the campaign, we've broadened the brief to include not just boots, but other sporting gear that is no longer used.

It's a great chance for those of us who have hung up our boots, hockey sticks and footwear to dust them off and donate to those who need them - some of whom would otherwise be sitting the season out.

No one needs to be reminded of both the joy and many other dividends of kids in sport.

But sporting gear doesn't come cheap.

Each year we've been astounded at the generosity of those who donate to our boot and gear bank. Most items are in good nick, many are great and some are brand new.

Drop-off points are at our newspaper's offices in Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau and Dannevirke. Those keen to donate in Wairoa can hand them in at the Wairoa Community Centre.

You can also donate at Sport Hawke's Bay's base at Pettigrew Green Arena.

After a few weeks of collecting we'll hand the gear over to Sport Hawke's Bay where the items will be distributed to those most in need.

So c'mon the Bay, bring in your unwanted gear, have it go another round.
