"They took their opportunities, in the attacking circle, to convert as well. From memory they had seven shots and converted five of them - that's not too bad.
"We're working on when to pass to the player and when to pass into space, they executed that well last weekend," Edwards said.
This weekend the team is in Whangarei competing in the Nelda Putt Trophy tournament with Auckland, Northland, Counties Manukau, Tauranga, Waikato and North Harbour.
"Auckland, Northland and North Harbour are usually the strongest in the national pool so this weekend is going to be a really good indication of where we'll be."
While winning trophies is desirable, all the tournaments the team play in during the next few months are seen as preparation for the national tournament in Tauranga in October, Edwards said.
"We're working towards that, that's the key for us. In the selection process we looked at the basics because we know in a tournament if you get an injury or you're tired, your basics need to remain.
"It's a very strong group of girls who know the basics well."
He said hockey could be an expensive sport and attending the necessary tournaments in the lead up to nationals was going to cost each girl about $2000 over the next three months.
"These young ladies train hard and play hard, some cover many kilometres to attend training.
"They're doing what fundraising they can and the Bay of Plenty Hockey Association has been great with its efforts to fundraise and keep costs down. But, the reality is hockey is one of those expensive sports.
"We're now looking for a corporate sponsor for this team as they continue their journey towards nationals in October."
